First there was password identification, then
came fingerprint verification devices, now we
have security systems that read the contours of
our face. The world of security control seems
to be shouting biometric technology right into
the face of the millennium.
Yeh said, compared with other similar
biometrics systems designed for user authentication,
the contact-free face-recognition technology
is easy to use, less expensive and reduces intrusions
of privacy.
While users need to invest in new
scanning devices to enact a fingerprint recognition
process, Yeh said many consumers today are already
equipped with PC cameras, which can be used
to facilitate the face recognition system.
Furthermore, Yeh said consumers
often associate fingerprint samples with police
work and crime investigations, which turns them
off using fingerprint systems as proof of identity.
